Dagana Dzongkhag, nestled in the lush southern part of Bhutan, is a region where nature and history intertwine beautifully. With over 80% of its land cloaked in forests, Dagana boasts a vibrant canopy of hardy trees such as Champ, Augury, Chirpine, and Sal. This verdant paradise lies below the major valleys of Thimphu and Wangdue Phodrang, extending down to Bhutan's southern border.
The district derives its name from the historic Daga Trashiyangtse Dzong, a monumental fortress established in 1651 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel, the unifier of Bhutan. This ancient Dzong still serves as the district's administrative center, standing as a testament to Dagana's rich cultural heritage. The population here is mainly composed of the Ngalops and the Lhotshampas, but recent migrations have infused the region with even greater cultural diversity, introducing new festivals and traditions that enliven the community.
One of Dagana's most intriguing features is its trio of mysterious megaliths. Known locally as “Sky Pillar Rock” (Do Namkhai Kaw), “The Rock of Ancient Steps” (Do Kelpai Genthey), and “The Frontier Sky Fortress” (Tha Namkhai Dzong), these stones are shrouded in legend. It is said that during the construction of Daga Trashiyangtse Dzong, the Frontier Sky Fortress megalith emitted telepathic warnings to the builders, cautioning that the Dzong would collapse if built any higher. To this day, the golden cupola of the Dzong is level with the tip of this enigmatic rock.
Dagana is dotted with Buddhist temples and monasteries that echo the spiritual heartbeat of the region. Among these, Shathong Lhakhang and Nyindukha Lhakhang stand out. Shathong Lhakhang was founded by the Buddhist Master Dupthob Shawa Ripa, a revered figure believed to have lived for over 900 years. Nyindukha Lhakhang, dating back to the 18th century, adds to the historical tapestry of Dagana.
The lifeblood of Dagana's economy is agriculture, with oranges and rice being the primary crops. The lush fields and vibrant orchards not only provide sustenance but also paint a picturesque landscape that embodies the spirit of Dagana. This district is not just a place; it's an experience of history, culture, and natural beauty all rolled into one enchanting destination.
